A TV documentary by a director known for his experiments with the plot (Conversation with a Cupboard Man) and his is deep involvement with the world of music (a film about Meredith Monk, music on the Paweł Szymański Festival). The pretext for this film was Arvo Pärt’s visit to Poznań, and the concerts at the Dominican Church during which the Orkiestra Młoda Filharmonia and Bornus Consort played Summa and Fratres. Like Leibnitz, the composer perceives music as a game of numbers, which – once in proper order – have the power to change us. In the context of Fratres he comes back to the metaphor of the axis, the upwards and downwards deflection of which forms the basis of the construct of the whole story. He also makes an interesting comparison of children to adults: the former sing when they are happy, the latter – when they are sad. Pärt’s conversation with Grzegorzek is intertwined with his lecture for students and footage from rehearsals and the concert itself. The author is still searching for the quietest possible, pianissimo possibile, a space “on the boarder of sound”.
